Meesho Legal Head
As a legal advisor, Meesho`s value, with which I resonate most, is to act with integrity. And that`s true at every stage of my work at Meesho, whether it`s talking to our suppliers, interacting with teams, or finding contract terms. In my role as legal counsel, no two days are the same. My day usually starts with reviewing contracts and negotiating their terms. I work closely with several departments, including finance, where contract ads are usually reviewed. I also have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with multiple teams at all levels, such as Marketing to Product and Tech. For example, if there is an ongoing campaign that does marketing, then I look at the legal aspects, or if a technical tool is involved, I try to understand how the tool works to better define the terms of the contract. While reviewing contracts may seem trivial, it is important to act on the understanding that goes beyond legal language, contracts define essential business relationships. Because our resident legal counsel is a true fan of Haruki Murakami, loves to doodle, queue for breakfast in Bangalore`s iconic darshinis early in the morning (she`s an avowed foodie) and be guilty of watching too many baby elephant videos on YouTube between legal contract reviews. You can see more of Varsha`s adorable doodles on her Instagram page here.
And as a lawyer, that really aligns with what I learned in law school. While I often retire from the legal field in a variety of situations where I have to use common sense as legalese, my legal education has proven useful in terms of contract negotiation, policy proposals, and research. The role of in-house counsel at Meesho was the perfect opportunity for me to demonstrate my ownership in every way possible. From a social justice perspective of law, I think the social impact Meesho has created has been eye-opening. Reaching large numbers of people on a large scale and spreading social justice is not an easy task. I graduated from NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad in 2015 and, like the rest of my fellow students, chose the proven path to a transactional and corporate work internship at BigLaw (full-service law firms). While working at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas in the corporate general team, I mainly worked on private equity transactions. The scope of individual work in these large companies is usually limited due to the volume and nature of transactional work – everything is run by a team. Although the experience and exposure were rewarding, I wanted to work in a place where I would have more responsibility for my work.
I then spent three years working on my litigation and consulting skills at a boutique law firm. Each new business step involves verifying compliance with applicable laws and safeguarding Meesho`s interests as a company. On a bad day, I just look at the writing on the wall and redo what I`m doing, because the influence we have here at Meesho is more than the sum of ourselves! One thing that motivates me every day is actually a poster with a quote from Lavi Shrivastava, one of Meesho`s top dealers, framed on the wall right next to my desk. The quote captures the struggles and joys of finding her own identity, thanks to the fact that she becomes a Meesho entrepreneur. I also work a lot on investment rounds and related agreements. For a fast-paced organization and an evolving social commerce space like Meesho, which is growing at scale, I am also responsible for implementing many standard policies. The social commerce sector is so dynamic that at Meesho we have to respect the law. Although I am no longer in court, I work closely with outside lawyers to manage litigation. From policy development on the go, to data protection and privacy, to legal advice for Meesho, Varsha Deiveegan`s job listing at Meesho is diverse and full of learning experiences every day. In her own words, she tells us what life was like after entering the Meesho rocket! For me, acting with integrity means negotiating fairly! Build that trust that everyone has fair bargaining power and is not being exploited.
The six months I spent in Meesho were incredible. Many lawyers take up this type of role at a later date, but I had the opportunity to do so quite early in my career. At Meesho, I learn every day by simply talking to colleagues from different teams and getting my hands dirty. It is crucial to understand the essence of the company as an in-house lawyer. I learned a lot more about the company during those six months than anywhere else in any other job.
