Additional rule resources are available on the Resources page. In 2018, a new rules policy was developed by SOAR and adopted by USA Ultimate`s Board of Directors. The Directive has set out a new process for determining how and when the rules will be revised. In the future, new rules, ideas and experiments will take place continuously, and the official rules will be reviewed every two years. New editions are designated for the years in which this Regulation is to enter into force. These proposed changes were presented to the entire ultimate community in mid-June for a month of public comment. Community feedback was reviewed in detail and optimizations were made to the initial change proposals that helped the Rules Working Group arrive at the official rules for Ultimate 2020-2021. Structural oversight of official rules and all aspects of how sport is played is the responsibility of the Mind, Officials and Rules Committee (SOAR), a board-level committee defined in the ultimate U.S. bylaws. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, is pleased to announce the release of the official rules for the 2020-2021 Ultimate. The updated rules reflect a year-long process of community review, review and feedback, resulting in the first update to the sport`s official rules since 2007. The new rules were officially approved by USA Ultimate`s Board of Directors on August 27, 2019 and will go into effect on January 1, 2020. The current rules of 11. Editions of Ultimate will be used for the remainder of 2019, including in all post-season club competitions leading up to the 2019 National Championships. The USA Ultimate Rules Working Group, which is part of the broader Spirit, Officiating and Rules (SOAR) committee, is responsible for reviewing and updating Ultimate`s official rules. They also provide resources and support to answer questions about the rules and help all players implement the rules on the field. The 2020-2021 Ultimate Official Rules, including any approved changes, will be used for all official USA Ultimate contests in 2020 and 2021. Outside of the USA Ultimate competition, tournament organizers and directors are free to adopt some or all of the updated rules by the end of 2019.

The basis of the ultimate rules is Spirit of the Game, which puts the responsibility for fair play on the player. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, respect for rules and basic fun. Variations in structure and ground rules can be used to account for special competitions, number of players, age of players or available space. Further rules that apply to certain types of World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) events are available in the relevant appendix. Within the SOAR committee, there are the Spirit of the Game, Rules and Observers working groups. These three groups work together through SOAR to implement policy decisions related to the rule and philosophy of the rules and to monitor relevant programs.

The ultimate sport divided into 10 bases. The changes to the new revised rules focused on five areas: many of these rules are general in nature and cover most situations, but some rules cover specific situations and take precedence over the general case. Led by Janna Hamaker, Director of National Rules, the Rules Working Group, in collaboration with the Spirit and Observer Working Groups, spent early 2019 evaluating ideas and developing concrete proposals for change. Guidelines for updates to the Ultimate Official Rules. If a thrower comes into contact with the body of the marker (except for the outstretched arms and legs), the relevant question is who initiated the contact, and the fault lies with the person who initiated the contact (XVI.H.3.a.4). This rule specifies that it is an offensive foul for the pitcher to try to “shoot the foul” by driving into the body of the scorer. However, if both players fight for the same place at the same time, this is considered a foul on the mark (XVI.H.3.a.3). Players are responsible for their own fouls and line calls. Players resolve their differences themselves. Where players are repositioned after a call depends on where the disc goes after the call is resolved (XVI.C.4), but the underlying justification is to try to put players in the position they would have been in if the violation had not occurred. There are 3 possible scenarios: a) the disc was never launched, b) the disc was launched and remains where it is, or c) the disc was launched but now returns to the launcher.

A version of the Official Rules of the Ultimate 2022-23 that highlights any changes from the previous edition. Each point starts with the two teams lined up at the top of the lines of the opposite end zone. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc into the offense. A set of rules has seven players per team. Every time the offense catches a pass in the end zone of the defense, the offense scores a point. Teams change direction after each goal, and the next point begins with a new move from the team that just scored. Rectangular shape with end areas at each end. A control field is 70 meters long and 40 meters wide, with end areas 20 meters deep. The latter is the situation that usually requires the most readjustment, and it is the one that many people tend to get wrong.

For example, if a long huck goes to a catcher and a defenseman sprints down the field, both go to the disc, the catcher calls a foul and the defenseman argues, the disc is returned to the pitcher. Now the catcher and defenseman (and maybe a few other players) are at the bottom, but the disc is back to the pitcher. In this situation, everyone should return to where they were when the litter box came up, as it was earlier than the time of the call. This usually means that both the receiver and defenseman return to a location much closer to where the receiver initiated their first cup. A “check” is used to restart the game when the game is over (i.e. after a phone call; II.R.3), and attack and defence must recognize readiness. Normally, the pitcher presents the disc to the scorer to “hit”, but in some situations where no offensive player is in possession of the disc or no scorer close enough to the pitcher after a break of play, an offensive or defensive “self-control” is used instead (VIII.D.4 and 5). First, contact between a launcher and a marker that is positioned illegally (for example, a marker that does not give space to the launcher) is usually a foul on the marker (XVI.H.3.a.3). This replaces everything written below, which only applies to legally positioned markers. A preview of the content moves from the rules of the 11th edition to the rules of the Ultimate 2020-2021.

Ultimate is a team sport that is played with a flying disc. It is played on a rectangular field, about half the width of a football field, with an end area at each end. The objective of each team is to score a goal by a player catching a pass in the end zone they attack. A pitcher cannot run with the disc, but can pass the disc in any direction to any teammate. Whenever a pass is incomplete, a turnover takes place, and the other team takes possession and tries to score in the opposite end zone. Matches are usually played for 15 goals or about 100 minutes. Ultimate is self-proclaimed and contactless. The spirit of the game guides the way players guide the game and behave on the field.

An overview of the key changes to the Official Rules for Ultimate 2022-23. Players should try to avoid physical contact during play. Spikes and screens are also prohibited. Basically, it depends on the type of fault, that is, whether the fault occurred before or after the recipient took control of the disk. WFDF Rules of Ultimate 2021-2024 – Official version valid from 2021-01-01 On the other hand, if the defender commits a foul on the receiver after the receiver has already taken possession of the disc, causing the receiver to lose possession of the disc, this is considered a “general” foul and XI.A.2 applies. In this case, the result is that a goal is awarded. Also note that a “strip” (XVI.H.3.d) is considered a general foul and therefore an undisputed band in the finish area is also a target. If the marker is placed in a legal position, contact between a pitcher and a marker is treated differently depending on whether the contact is with the marker`s outstretched arms and legs (i.e., arms outstretched or legs raised) or with the rest of the marker`s body (or legs planted). Let us look at each of these cases individually. c) If the disc has been launched, but it turns out that the disc returns to the pitcher, players will return to their place either when the call was made or when the disc was launched, whichever comes first.

Players who are not in the game can replace players in the game after a score and during an injury break. If the defender has soiled the receiver while the disc is in the air (or before possession is acquired), thereby preventing the receiver from catching the disc, this is considered a “reception fault” (XVI.H.3.b), and if not disputed, the receiver receives the disc at the site of the violation (XVI.H.3.b.2; which in this case is in the end area).
