Rhodes University Ba Law Requirements
Typically, applicants who have scored at least 60% in their legal theory major are admitted, as are applicants from other universities who have scored at least 60% in their previous year of study. If a candidate has not met these requirements, the Dean of the Faculty of Law has the discretion to admit the applicant for cause and subject to the availability of faculty resources. Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained their first degree from Rhodes University. This is available to individuals holding the B Juris or BA (Law) degree from a South African university. Individuals who have earned a bachelor`s degree with a significant number of legal subjects (e.g. Rhodes University graduates with a major in legal theory) may also be admitted to pursue the Bachelor of Laws degree under this option. Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained their first degree from Rhodes University with a concentration in legal theory. Admission to the LLB following this course is limited in number, and candidates who meet the admission requirements are not necessarily guaranteed a place. Students are encouraged to apply early for admission. In the first year of study, students must enroll in one of the faculties of humanities, natural sciences and business, depending on their choice of subjects. After their first year of study, those who meet the academic criteria can choose between a five-year program (e.g., BA or BCom LLB) or a four-year LLB program. Those who do not meet the academic criteria must complete the combined five-year pathway.
Applicants who have successfully completed the A-levels are eligible for a full exemption provided that passports in approved subjects meet the following requirements: Details on the structure of studies, requirements for the Bachelor of Laws and the content of the various courses can be found in the Faculty of Law section of the academic calendar. This information is also available on the faculty website: it is recommended that all South African applicants for the first time write the NBTs. If the applicant does not meet the automatic admission requirements, the NBT results will be included in the Dean`s decision on applications. These results can also be used if a candidate does not meet the entry requirements for their final exams. An APS score of 40 points and above will receive a fixed offer, 37-39 points will remain pending until the end of September to be considered by the Dean when the place is available. Candidates offering a combination of Advanced Level (A), Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS), Ordinary Level (O), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE) and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) will be counted five (5) different subjects. The LLB is now the only acceptable qualification for admission to the profession of lawyer or lawyer. The requirements that a person applying for admission to study must meet depend on the qualification they currently have and the LL.B. option they wish to pursue. Option (2) above is available to students who do not meet the requirements of option (1) or who have not been admitted under (1) due to resource constraints, and additionally to students who, after their first year at university, find that they only want to pursue the LLB and nothing else. The admission requirements are governed by L3.2b.
This rule allows admission to the LLB after the first year of study (either for BA, BCom or BSc) in which the student has followed legal theory as one of his courses, provided that he has passed both the fundamental principles of law and the introduction to law with an average of 65% and has achieved an overall average of 65% for his three non-legal courses studied that year.
